Grower Ove Horpestad: “Magical Hydrangea fits perfectly with our craftsmanship”

One of the newer collaborations within Magical Hydrangea is with Horpestad Gartneri AS from Norway, a family business that values craftsmanship and quality highly, making it a perfect fit with the vision of Magical Hydrangea. We spoke with Ove Horpestad, who runs the company together with his wife and daughter.

From vegetables to hydrangeas

It all started in 1971, when Ove’s parents built their first greenhouse for growing vegetables, such as tomatoes. “We produced vegetables until around 1993,” Ove explains. “After that, we gradually added other plants, like poinsettias, pelargoniums, impatiens, and gerberas. In 1998, we started growing hydrangeas, and nowadays they form the core of our production.”

It’s a true family business: Ove works together with his wife, and his daughter is gradually joining the company. “Two out of three children are not involved, but fortunately my daughter is taking over part of the business.” “This way it remains a family business with a strong tradition,” Ove says.

Why Horpestad Gartneri AS chose Magical Hydrangea

Ove began growing Magical Hydrangeas about a year ago. “It wasn’t just about market demand,” he explains. “We chose Magical Hydrangea because of the quality, the beautiful, long-lasting blooms, and the plants’ distinctive appeal. They fit perfectly with what we value: high-quality plants that truly make customers happy.”

In addition to the Magical indoor hydrangeas, Horpestad Gartneri AS also grows other seasonal plants, such as hellebores around the holidays. “It’s a nice mix, so we have something special to offer all year round,” Ove says.

A clear favorite: the Magical Revolution

Ove’s personal favorite from the range? “The Revolution, in both blue and pink. That was the first Magical I started growing, and I’m still impressed by the quality and the beautiful flowers. It feels special because we started our Magical journey with this plant.”

“We are also testing the garden variety now, which is an exciting expansion for the future.” 

From greenhouse to council chamber

Besides growing hydrangeas, Ove has an unusual hobby: he is active in local politics and has been involved in the municipal council for fourteen years, currently serving as deputy mayor. “It provides a nice contrast to the work in the greenhouse. I enjoy being involved in the community,” he says with a smile.
