This summer: the perfect time to purchase a hydrangea
This summer is characterized by its unpredictability and variability: one week it rains, the next week temperatures climb to 30 degrees Celsius, followed by days of thunderstorms and downpours before it becomes warm and humid again. For us humans, it's truly challenging because just as we get used to the heat, it's replaced by rain. But there's good news too: for many plants, these ups and downs are beneficial. Particularly thirsty plants thrive on rainy days followed by sunny spells. Hydrangeas are blooming more exuberantly than ever this summer. These popular ornamental shrubs excel in both abundance and the colour of their flowers.
Hydrangeas in bloom
If you've been considering getting a hydrangea, now is the perfect time! Especially plants on balconies or terraces are thriving this summer, indulging you with their impressive floral displays. This hasn't always been the case in recent years. Pot plants generally face more challenging growth conditions than those planted in garden soil. They have less soil volume available, which means they receive fewer nutrients (unless regularly fertilized) and have much smaller water storage capacities. This typically makes them less resilient during dry and hot months. However, this year is different: thanks to all the rain—which hydrangeas prefer over tap water—they are truly thriving.
Strong, uncomplicated, magical
But what if the coming weeks bring more sunshine? Then it's best to rely on particularly robust varieties. The Magical Hydrangea comes highly recommended. The extensive range includes various variants, all of which have high tolerance against sun, rain, and even frost, as winter is sure to come. Moreover, these strong hydrangeas require less frequent watering compared to most other hydrangeas on the market. However, the trump card of the Magical varieties is their magical quality: they change colour at least three times during their months-long blooming period.
From romantic to fiery
Magical Hydrangea offers an extensive range with different types to suit everyone's preferences. The compact-growing Magical Jewel, for example, starts off pink or blue-violet and makes an impressive transition from green to dark red. This variant is ideal for small south-facing balconies, as it can tolerate full sun all day and grows beautifully compact.
The Magical Evolution prefers a bit more space. Its flowers are slightly larger than those of other hydrangeas and can fully develop on larger terraces. The colour resembles that of Jewel, but the shades are more intense, and the red that appears in the autumn shines beautifully.
The Magical Greenfire appears fiery: it surprises with a red-green pattern on its petals reminiscent of flames. Initially, the colours are light and subtle, but over the weeks, they intensify until a rich green predominates.
A Magical fits (almost) any pot
Most Magical Hydrangeas grow up to a meter tall and are available in five and ten-liter pots. Therefore, they are suitable for both large rooftop terraces and small row house balconies. These strong hydrangeas are available at garden centres and specialty retailers.
